Very good points Alan.

I think another view to keep in mind is that God works through the laws of blessing and cursings, and in the case that is graphically pictured with the sin of Achan (Joshua 7), “wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man perished not alone in his iniquity” (Joshua 22:20).

The success they had up to that point in their battles was now thwarted by one man’s sin, and compounded by his families silence, and no doubt others who had turned a blind eye.

Because when dealing with the actions of a whole group of people such as an army or a unit on a mission, because of the complex nature of the interactions that normally follows, the way of controlling the laws of blessings and cursings is therefore compounded by the angels who monitor the events. Afterwards when the truth came out the excursion of the battle for Ai was successful.
